We hope that ‘Odour of Chrysanthemums: A Text in Process’ will be of interest to general readers, researchers and students at all levels (including the learning of language through literature). This area of the site offers an introduction to different critical approaches and activities which can be used to guide either private study or classroom activities.

Basic Questions
What do we do when we’re faced with a literary text for the first time? These general questions help to clarify and order the initial response, giving focus to the jumble of impressions and enabling us to explore what the story is about, how it is made, how it works.

A Dialect Approach
These tasks, developed by Hilary Hillier to supplement her essay ‘Talking Lawrence’ explore the ways in which attention to Lawrence’s use of dialect forms enhances not only our understanding of the story, but also of language itself.

Class Tasks
Jason Ward has worked with the texts with UK students and abroad with second-language learners. His example exercises model tasks to guide and train our attention to comparative and evaluative analysis of the different versions.

Genetic Criticism
‘Genetic Criticism’ is the name for critical thinking about the relation of published work to the processes of composition and creation. Finn Fordham and Sarah Davison offer suggestions for starting out in this fascinating field, both sketching some first exercises and posing the more general, fundamental questions which underlie this fascinating area of work.
